Today when it rained, I looked in the sky
And I saw a rainbow, oh so high
Up in the clouds with the sun shining through.
Then I said to myself, I'm a rainbow too!
Come and listen! I'll tell you why
I'm like the rainbow in the sky.
My colors change and come and go,
And I just watch them because I know
That all the colors like to tell
Another story about myself.

I am red.
Red as the stoplight in the street,
Red as the blood on my skinned knee,
Red as the big summer sun going down,
I am red.
My cheeks get red when I play outside.
My eyes do, too, when I have cried.
Red's inside me when I'm mad and don't tell;
Then I want to kick and yell.
Red is strong and bad and fun;
It tells me when to shout and run.
Red hurts sometimes and pulls me through,
And tells me to be careful.

I am orange.
Orange as the rising sun,
As a thousand tangerines,
Orange as a pumpkin on Halloween,
I am orange.
I love the clown with bright orange hair,
With the big orange lollypop at the fair,
Orange is the blaze of the campfire at night
Where I warm my hands by the flickering light.
Orange makes me happy, funny and free,
It tells me to skip and to go climb a tree.
There's nobody, then, who can bother me
When I am orange.
I am yellow.
Yellow as a banana
And an ear of corn,
Yellow as a summer's morn,
I am yellow.
I get into mischief when I am yellow,
Then I laugh like a sunflower out in the meadow.
Yellow is my canary, who chirps all day.
I'm just like him when I get my way!
Yellow's busy making plans in my head
And I just don't feel like going to bed.
Dark yellow as mustard, light yellow as hay,
I am yellow, yellow today.
I am green.
Green as the hills in spring,
Green as bright spongy moss,
In the forest where elves sing,
I am green.
If I am jealous, I turn dark green,
Then I feel low, and I feel mean.
But light green makes me smile a lot,
Then I don't care what I've got or not.
Green as the sea and the emerald lake,
Green as a frog and a garden snake,
Green lets me rest and lets me grow.
I love green.
I am blue.
Blue as the big sky with no clouds,
Blue as the cool mountains,
As a cold stream, as a quiet dream,
I am blue.
When I am sad I turn dark blue.
It feels like there's lead in my shoes.
My voice is blue when I sing a song;
Light blue makes me soft and strong.
Blue is flying, blue is still,
It's a bluejay on my windowsill.
It loves to hear, it loves to tell,
That I am blue.
I am purple.
Purple as grapes,
As a king's cape,
Purple as the winter's sky,
I am purple.
I am purple when I pray,
And when I talk to the stars
They say how special I am,
And that I can live forever like them.
I'll climb purple mountains one day, perhaps,
With my compass and purple knapsack.
Day and night go in a circle.
I feel safe when I am purple.
I am white.
White as fluffy clouds,
As a glass of milk,
As fairy silk,
I am white.
White can be cold and hard as ice,
Or soft and warm like little white mice.
I know my guardian angel is white,
She hovers near me with her nice white light.
White is my paper before I draw,
I can even draw things I never saw.
White as a swan, a goose, and a dove,
White as a sheet, a tooth, and a glove,
I am white.
I am gold.
Gold as the radiant sun,
Gold as a ring,
As the crown of a king,
I am gold.
Gold makes me remember, I too, am a sun;
My heart turns gold when I love someone.
Gold as the wheat fields in the warm summer's air,
Gold as the princess's long, flowing hair.
I am gold when I feel wise,
And I have sparkles in my eyes.
Gold makes me whole; it makes me new.
I am gold and so are you.
My colors change and come and go,
And I just watch them because I know
That all the colors like to tell
Another story about myself.
And now you know, and now you see:
You are a rainbow, just like me!
